I was out shopping last week for “show and tell” for a little talk I was giving about tile, (of all things!), and I thought you might like to see some of the BEAUTIFUL stuff I ran across. Aren't these porcelain koi amazing?!
If you’re planning a kitchen or bath remodel, you may be wanting some ideas and tips on what to buy, so this is for you. If you don't have a project in the works, by the time you're done reading, you’ll be inspired to put in a new backsplash or re-do your floor. Or just do some drooling on your old floor!
Miles of styles
There really are thousands and thousands of options out there when it comes to tile - - porcelain, ceramic, glass, terracotta, metal, and natural stones like granite, marble, slate, onyx, travertine, limestone - - it's endless!
So what's your style? Old World? Contemporary? Retro? Beach Cottage? When it comes to tile, there's something for everyone.
The good old days
Do you like a Bungalow or Old Portland feel? Here’s just ONE of the incredible display walls I ran into at Pratt & Larson, one of the premier tile stores in town. All hand-made and hand-glazed tile in a glorious variety of colors and styles. These kinds of tiles look great on fireplace surrounds and backsplashs, even kitchen hoods.
This one's got an antique feel too, and makes me think of Downton Abbey or Pittock Mansion.
How about Mid-Century Modern? This splashy piece comes in a bunch of colors and would look fun in a retro house re-do or a kids' bath.
Modern and whimsical
Here's a rainbow of contemporary glass tiles. I love the way they have these arranged like giant paint swatches. Can't choose just one? Mix and match to fit whatever color palette floats your boat.
And speaking of floating your boat, for my beach bum friends, (and you know who you are!) here's a set of four tiles that form a little ocean mural. Such a fun bathroom these would make!
This one is for all my quilter friends. (Didn't I promise there was something for everyone?) You can pick your own colors so your kitchen or bathroom will match whatever you've got on your bed! :-D
Classic marble
Here are a couple dramatic, mosaics that make me think of Italy and classic, opulent rooms. These are from Oregon Tile and Marble and come in sheets that fit together, and would make a stunning feature over your cooktop or in a shower.
These pretty, pretty chrysanthemums are glass mosaics and are cut into teensy, minuscule pieces by water-jet. They're quite expensive, but if you only purchase a few square feet and use them as an accent, you'll have a stunning room without blowing your budget.
Completely unique
Have you ever heard of wood tiles? Yes, SOLID WOOD. They are pre-finished and pre-sealed in polyurethane, can be refinished, and come in a variety of species. WOW.
And I've saved my favorite for last. These sophisticated, white on white flowers are made from Carrara marble and river shells. Sooo glamorous.
So, you got a favorite? What's YOUR tile style?
